Choi Kids

Choi Kwang Do children’s classes have been taking place in Rottingdean since 2003 when we first brought Choi Kwang Do to Brighton.

Choi Kwang Do children’s classes in Brighton since 2003 at the full time school on Rottingdean seafront.

Many of the children in the school have been training more than 5 or 6 years, have already earned thier black belts and are working towards 2nd or 3rd degree black belt.

They are also the first to welcome new children to class understanding only to well how important a supportive environment is to everyone’s enjoyment and development especially someone just getting started.

We achieved a dream in November 2006 when Grandmaster Choi the founder of Choi Kwang Do cut the ribbon and open the full time school on the seafront at Rottingdean.  It wasn’t until almost 2 years later after 706 days of legal back and forth between 3 sets of solicitors that the lease could finally be signed and the school finally opened.

Grandmaster Choi the founder of Choi Kwang Do cuts the ribbon to open Brighton's full time Choi Kwang Do school on the seafront at RottingdeanWe’ve been here ever since although we stopped accepting new children into the school for a 3 year period unless their parents were starting to train.  My reasoning for this was that we’d seen such a noticable difference where the parent and the child were sharing the learning experience than when they weren’t.

However the children in the school have since persuaded us to promote the our children’s classes again and to accept children into the school even if their parents are not training.

So if you have seen any kind of marketing material promoting our childrens classes it’s the first in a long time.  We still intend to limit the numbers of children in the school to a number that we feel we can help develop effectively.

  • Classes currently run 3 times a week from 5.30-6.30pm
  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Kids training in the maining dojang at Brighton Choi Kwang DoWe are considering restarting the Saturday morning class from 9.30-10.30am if you’d be interested in attending on a Saturday morning please let us know and we’ll add your name to the list.

Some parents have also expressed an interest in joining a parents class upstairs while the children’s class is going on downstairs.  If you won’t do it for yourself don’t you owe it to your child to look after yourself as well.

As a parent I know this is not always easy to arrange childcare and set time aside for  exercise, there are so many other important things to do aren’t there.  As a result when does it get done?

So this could be a great opportunity to recharge your batteries, de-stress and unwind.  There’d be no childcare to arrange because you’d be training upstairs while your child is training downstairs.

We’ve spoken about this many times, everytime we do a number of parents say “yes!” but there’s never quite been enough response to get started.  If you’d also be interested in this, let us know.  If you don’t think you can do Choi you probably have not heard from any of the adults in the school who range from 20 to 80, from very fit and or flexible to just gettting started and keeping things comfortable.

There’s a good reason we call it the martial art for life, its not like any other martial art you might have heard of, seen or read about.  It’s the only wellbeing martial art we know of that can genuinely and consistently benefit 3 generations of students.  We have a good number of grandparents training in the adult classes, some have been training for a few years others just a few months, they love it and are making excellent progress.

Perhaps you might be wondering what grandparents doing Choi Kwang Do has to do with your child.  Well I feel this is the ultimate proof that Choi Kwang Do is as effective as a wellbeing programme as it is as a martial art and form of self defence, science and theory is one thing but you can’t beat real life results.

After all if an exercise programme is good for you, surely it would be good for you at pretty much any stage of life.  When we are young our bodies can adapt and put up with a lot, even things that are not good for us or kind to our central nervous system.

Unfortunately many martial artists only find out after 10 – 20 years of training that what they were doing was bad for their body.  It didn’t feel that bad at time, but eventually many are forced to stop.

However Choi Kwang Do is different and really can be a gift that not only lasts a lifetime but a gift your child can enjoy for a lifetime.

Do give us a call if you have any questions on 01273 307 500.

My mum, Cath will normally answer the phone, she started training with us last year which is another dream come true for me, when she was able to retire from the nursing home she worked at in Kent and move to Rottingdean to work with us in the school and join the daytime adult classes.  Now I knowshe  is doing exercise that is enjoyable and good for her because I’m usually helping run the class.

Mum is really enjoying her Choi Kwang Do training, she is now orange belt and just last week became a assistant instructor, sometimes our girls (her granddaughters) help her with her techniques as most of them are a higher belt.

What we are doing with adult classes during the daytime is quite unique even amongst Choi Kwang Do schools at the moment and something Brighton Choi Kwang Do has helped pioneer.  It was mission we set out on about 4 years ago to really prove that Choi Kwang Do is a martial art for life.  We call this programme Choi for Life and everyone who visits the school now agrees we’ve proven the point including ITV Meridian who did a 7 minute piece in February 2008, you can watch their news report on the site. All the best
